In August, members of VMP Rap & Hip-Hop will receive the first vinyl reissue of Lord Finesse’s The Awakening. The album comes on black and gold splatter over clear vinyl, and comes with an exclusive stencil. Read below for why we picked this album for this month.

Why We Picked This

Andrew Winistorfer, Editorial Director: Lord Finesse is one of the guys who made New York hip-hop sound like New York hip-hop in the early ’90s. He produced for folks like Biggie and Capone-N-Noreaga, in addition to being an M.C. himself and producing and mentoring Big L. This record was his third and final studio album, and is widely considered his best, and one of NYC rap’s best albums of the ’90s. It has a whole murderer’s row of underground and old school early ’90s New York guys, and it’s really an opportunity for us to do a throwback New York record. We haven’t really done one like this since Camp Lo last year: that dusty, guys gettin’ their best raps off, a really good ’90s rap album.

The opportunity to work with Tommy Boy came up again when we did the Prince Paul record last month, and they said they’d never reissued Lord Finesse and we jumped at the opportunity to do this one. Nineties New York rap is always our most requested subgenre in our Rap & Hip-Hop sub, so we’re giving the people what they want with this one.

The Packaging

This one comes on a clear splatter vinyl, with black and gold splatter. Been a minute since we’ve done one that looks like this. It sounds as good as it ever has, and comes with a dope Lord Finesse stencil. If you use it outside, at least wear a mask.
